1. An Enemy Called Average

This self-help Christian book is a treasure for those who are yearning to break free from being mediocre. It tells us that the only things that keep us from achieving great things are our tendencies to conform to the average. As a result, we become bounded by these chains that deter us from growing personally. Thus, this book would help each of us to grow in faith, and that it can be used to pry us away from being average.

The book is subdivided into 76 concise yet meaningful nuggets, each containing deeply-rooted learning and realizations in life. A number of these nuggets will even put in question some of the perspectives and ideologies you're currently upholding.

This book will definitely guide you in achieving immeasurable success and greatness as it helps you reflect deep down into your inner core. These are some of the things you will find out as you read the book: a goal is a dream with a deadline, today is the day to get through what you've been going through, stand tall by falling to your knees, etc.

2. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is an obra maestra of Stephen R. Covey that sold over 15 millions copy globally. It tells us the prime distinction between Character Ethic and Value Ethic, and that the former is principle-based which we should strive for rather than the latter.

Principle-centered approach is rather more long-term in nature than those that are not. In the corporate world (as well as at home), a lot of people have been using temporary fixes (or social aspirins as Covey coins the term) to address their problems; however, as time would pass, the effects would wear off and the problem resurfaces again. This, as Covey mentioned in the book, is what many books advise and encourage us to do. But he stands firmly against that kind of approach, instead he teaches us a more sensible approach which would provide us solutions addressing the root causes and not just the symptoms.

This book will certainly make you experience the correct paradigm shift in your life!

3. The Shack

The Shack is a novel by William Young that will bring you to a worthwhile virtual yet spiritual pilgrimage. The well-written story of Young is very engaging that it would make it seem like you are living the life of the main character, Mackenzie Philips. You'll feel the overflowing feelings and emotions in every happening in the Philips' life.

Just like everyone of us, Philips encountered several hardships in life that gradually weakens His relationship with God. Until one day, he experienced the most tragic part of his life which he called "The Great Sadness" that ultimately separated Philips from HIm. However, four years after the incident, he received an invitation from God through a suspicious note, telling him to visit the shack. And this is where his spiritual transformation began.

This book will set you in a journey of finding your way back "home". And would help you realize valuable things in life which we should forever treasure. This book will definitely nourish your spirituality!

4. The Little Prince

Published during the 40s in France, this book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry entitled The Little Prince is undeniably a golden nugget! That's why it has been translated to several languages already.

What's good about this book is that it really challenges how we see things, that there are times that we refuse to see what is supposed to be real, and remain adamant in believing that the unreal is the reality. Most of the realizations in the book are deep; that being the case is a challenge as well. We need to decipher the underlying realizations in the story.

This book will embark you in a journey of learning what separates the unreal from reality.

"One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye."

5. Making Friends

"If you want friendship, you must be a friend first" - A. Matthews

This is a self-help book written and illustrated by Andrew Matthews, the same author who wrote the bestseller "Being Happy". It explores every aspect of one's relationship with other people including some false beliefs involving friendship. One example is this: Matthews noted in his book that being friends is never an excuse to ridicule your friends. This will negatively impact your friend's self-esteem and possibly your relationship even if he does not let it show.

Matthews also illustrates common scenarios and problems we face in relationships and helps us to understand each of them - why conflict arises? how we can approach the problem? what do we do to avoid such problems etc. This book, in other words, will equip you in the world of socializing with people. If you are a professional, this can still be helpful because it will show you how to understand your co-workers and even your boss, and guide you in handling various situations you will encounter with them.

In a nutshell (he uses this phrase very often),this book effectively teaches us the fundamental and essential things to consider in every relationship. It includes enjoying companions, dealing with people charged with negativity, saying no sometimes, and most of all wining friends!

(I remember that I was 13 years old when I read this. That's why this book means a lot to me. It paved the way for me in becoming more sociable.)
